Key Points:
Having an outlet for grief can be a great way to keep your character from getting too mopey or isolated.
Sports, crafts, social clubs, and artistic ventures can all be great outlets to pull your character along in his journey.
New friends or routines can help keep a character's life interesting and high-paced in the face of his grief.
11 GRIEVING BEFORE THE LOSS
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a story centered on grieving prior to the loss of a character. We get to see the ups and downs of Hazel, the main character, as she anticipates her own death, and tries to make it as painless as possible for those around her. It’s heart-wrenching to watch her grief journey.
When a person you love is sick or suffering, you begin to grieve before the actual loss. In some cases you may think that most of your grieving is done by the time of death. But despite your preparations, the grief that occurs after a person's death can go beyond all your expectations.
Does grieving before the loss make grieving easier? In some cases, it probably does. But as with all grief, it is an individual process, and there are also probably many instances where it makes it more difficult to get through. After my dad's sudden death, this was a question I wondered about. Would it have been easier to get through if I had had some warning, or some time to say goodbye? But then I've talked to friends who have nursed sick loved ones for many months or even years, and I wouldn't say that is easier at all.
